Megan C. Pines, This Year’s Recipient of the Joey M. Spano
Varsity 'S' Club Graduate Endowed Fellowship

The MSU Varsity ‘S’ Club has named Megan C. Pines the 2012 recipient of the Joey M. Spano Varsity ‘S’ Club Graduate Endowed Fellowship.

Pines will be awarded $2,000 towards her graduate studies at Michigan State. A four year letter winner in woman’s soccer, Megan will graduate this May, 2012 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting.  Megan is a four year member of MSU Honors College where she earned a 3.97 overall GPA (a perfect 4.0 in her major).  She has been accepted to the Eli Broad School of Business where she will pursue a Masters of Science in Accounting with an anticipated graduation date of May, 2013.  Pines has already accepted a position with the Detroit accounting firm, Deliotte and Touche upon completion of her graduate studies.

The Joey M. Spano Endowment was established in fall, 2008 by the club to provide academic scholarships to Spartan letter winners who wish to pursue an advanced degree at MSU.  The endowment seeks to support talented former student-athletes who are MSU Varsity ‘S’ Club members in good standing, have completed their undergraduate studies with a GPA of 3.1 or higher and have demonstrated outstanding character and exceptional leadership through university and community involvement.

As with all prior Spano Fellowship awardees, Pines’ remarkable accomplishments in the classroom, on the athletic field and in the community, makes her a perfect recipient for this award.  Her achievements exemplify the characteristics the Varsity ‘S’ Club seeks in its honorees.  These include Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, student-athletes who have a GPA of 3.7 while competing in a varsity Big Ten sport; Scholar Athlete Award in 2011 and 2012, individual who has reached at least junior academic status and maintains the highest GPA on her team; MSU Academic Gala, Highest Honor, varsity letter winners who have received greater than a 3.75 GPA; Big Ten Scholar Athlete, student-athletes who have maintained a 3.0 GPA while competing in a Big Ten Sport.  Megan is graduating with High Honors, finishing in the top 6% of her graduating class.

In spite of her demanding schedule, Pines is dedicated to community service participating in worthy events such as Chuck-A-Puck, to raise funds and awareness for children with cancer at MSU hockey games and MSU’S SNAPP, where she spoke with young athletes in the local community about the importance of nutrition and exercise.  Megan also participated in Special Olympics, Junior Spartan Club and Relay for Life.

Although her career goal is to become a CPA and a partner at one of the big four accounting firms, Pines understands the importance of community service.  “I want to use the network that I hope to build from being a CPA and volunteer my time with an organization I am passionate about,” said Pines.  “I would love to be able to sit on a board where I can use my financial and accounting knowledge to help a non-profit organization succeed in its efforts to help others.  Giving back to the community is extremely important and necessary for communities to thrive”.

Megan’s outstanding work ethic and discipline has impressed her teammates and, in particular, her coach.  "We are excited that Megan has received the prestigious Spano Fellowship, said Tom Saxton, MSU Women’s Varsity Soccer Coach.  “She has always represented Michigan State and our team with excellence in the classroom, in the community and on the field. We are all very proud of her."

“Receiving the MSU Varsity ‘S’ Club fellowship award is a distinct honor,” said Pines.   “I am so very proud to be a Spartan and I look forward to being an active member of the MSU Varsity 'S' Club in the years ahead”.

Megan C. Pines will be honored at the MSU Varsity 'S' Club’s Reunion Weekend September 20-23, 2012.

The MSU Varsity ‘S’ Club, the official letter winners club of Michigan State University, wishes to continue this tradition of honoring our student-athletes in supporting their higher education dreams, but we need your help.  This fellowship is not yet fully funded to endowment status.  Our goal is to raise $150,000 to support the higher education of varsity letter winners at MSU.
