Lindsey McPherson, This Year’s Recipient of the Joey M. Spano
Varsity “S” Club Graduate Endowed Fellowship
The MSU Varsity ‘S’ Club has named Lindsey McPherson the 2015 recipient of the Joey M. Spano Varsity ‘S’ Club Graduate Endowed Fellowship. A four-year letter winner in women’s golf, Lindsey graduated last December with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Accounting. Lindsey will pursue a Master’s degree in Business Analytics at Michigan State with an expected graduation date of December 2015.
The Joey M. Spano Endowment was established in the fall of 2008 by the Varsity ‘S’ Club to provide academic scholarships to Spartan letter winners who wish to pursue an advanced degree at MSU. The endowment seeks to support talented, former student-athletes who are MSU Varsity Alumni ‘S’ Club members in good standing, have completed their undergraduate studies with a GPA of 3.1 or higher and have demonstrated outstanding character and exceptional leadership through university and community involvement.
As with all prior Spano Fellowship awardees, McPherson’s outstanding accomplishments in the classroom, on the athletic field and in the community, makes her a fitting recipient of this award. Her achievements exemplify the characteristics the Varsity Alumni ‘S’ Club seeks in its honorees. These include winning the 2014 & 2015 Big Ten Sportsmanship Award and contributing to the golf team’s Big Ten Championship in 2014. Lindsey, along with many of her fellow Spartans, was recently honored at the annual MSU Academic Gala which recognizes student-athletes with a 3.0 GPA and above.
Lindsey’s accomplishments do not end at the golf course. In spite of her demanding schedule, Lindsey was elected to the Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) Executive Board and served as secretary in the 2014-15 school year. She also was team co-representative at monthly meetings, representing NCAA and university current affairs.
She is also dedicated to community service indicated by her involvement with several charitable events such as Chuck-A-Puck, Canned Foods Drive, and Teams for Toys. She has volunteered at St. Vincent’s Children’s Home and provided golf instruction for Haslett Elementary students inspiring young ones to pick up the game of golf.
“If I could choose one word to sum up my five years at Michigan State, it would be determination,” said McPherson. “I have learned the importance of this word in the classroom, on the course, and in outreach opportunities. Now, I have my eyes set on a Master’s degree in Business Analytics here at Michigan State, and because of everything I have learned as a student-athlete, I know I will succeed. Eventually, this degree, paired with my experiences as a student-athlete, will help me realize my two ultimate future goals: playing golf on the LPGA, and being an integral part of a fortune 500 company.”
Lindsey’s outstanding work ethic and dedication has impressed her teammates and, in particular, her coach. “This is a wonderful honor for an incredible young woman who is very deserving of the Joey M. Spano Endowment,” said Women’s Varsity Golf Head Coach, Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll. “Lindsey exemplifies everything a Spartan student-athlete should; passion, drive, determination, strong work ethic and a love for the Green and White”.
“What an honor it is to be chosen for the 2015 fellowship’” said McPherson. “This award means so much to me because I know I have fellow Spartans who believe in my dreams of furthering my education. I couldn’t have imagined going to grad school anywhere else, because East Lansing is home. Even though my days of playing golf for Michigan State have ended, I am confident that I can further represent the Green and White in my days as a grad school student.”
Lindsey McPherson will be honored at the Varsity 'S' Club’s Reunion Weekend September 17-19, 2015, where the club will be celebrating its 100th
The MSU Varsity Alumni ‘S’ Club, the official letter winners club of Michigan State University, wishes to continue this tradition of honoring our student-athletes in supporting their higher education dreams, but we need your help. This fellowship is not yet fully funded to endowment status. Our goal is to raise $150,000 to support the higher education of varsity letter winners at MSU.
