Kristen Henn - 2014 Recipient of the Joey M. Spano
Varsity Alumni “S” Club Graduate Endowed Fellowship
The MSU Varsity Alumni ‘S’ Club has named Kristen Henn the 2014 recipient of the Joey M. Spano Varsity Alumni ‘S’ Club Graduate Endowed Fellowship.
Ms. Henn will be awarded $2,000 towards her graduate studies at Michigan State. She is a four year letter winner in field hockey serving as team captain in 2011, 2012, and 2013 seasons. Ms. Henn graduated in May, 2013 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biosystems Engineering.
The Joey M. Spano Endowment was established in Fall, 2008 by the Club to provide academic scholarships to Spartan letter winners who wish to pursue an advanced degree at MSU. The endowment seeks to support talented former student-athletes who are MSU Varsity ‘S’ Club members in good standing, have completed their undergraduate studies with a GPA of 3.1 or higher and have demonstrated outstanding character and exceptional leadership through university and community involvement.
As with all prior Spano Fellowship awardees, Ms. Henn’s remarkable accomplishments in the classroom and the community make her a perfect recipient for this award. Her achievements exemplify the characteristics the MSU Varsity ‘S’ Club seeks in its honorees. As she mentioned in her essay, “In both athletics and academics, I am passionate about working with others towards a common goal and solving complicated problems”.
Being a student-athlete has a very demanding schedule but Ms. Henn carved out time to be dedicated to community service participating in worthy events such as National Reading Month at Morrice Elementary School, No More Sidelines where she coached disabled children about the game of field hockey, Chuck-a-Puck to raise funds and awareness for children with cancer at MSU hockey games, Haven House helping children with their homework and Student-Athlete Food Drive.
She has made an impression on her teammates and coaching staff with her strong work ethic and passion on and off the playing fields. Helen Knull, MSU Head Varsity Field Hockey Coach, says “Kristen has been a role model for her team mates and the program during her career at Michigan State. Her ability to be an exceptional student and athlete is commendable. In her final season she managed to balance the rigors of Graduate School in Biosystems Engineering while being a third year Captain and All Big Ten selection. Kristen has left a lasting impression on her team mates and coaching staff, mentoring the underclassmen and always loyal to the program”.
"I am truly honored to receive the Joey M. Spano Varsity 'S' Club Endowed Fellowship. I look forward to continuing my education at Michigan State by pursuing a Master's degree in Biosystems Engineering,” says Ms. Henn. “MSU has provided me with countless opportunities in both athletics and academics and I am excited to stay connected with the athletic community while in graduate school as a member of the Varsity 'S' Club."
Kristen Henn will be honored at the Varsity 'S' Club’s Reunion Weekend September 18 – 20, 2014, the MSU vs. EMU Football weekend. The Reunion Banquet will be held on Friday, September 19, 2014 at the Kellogg Center. Contact the MSU Varsity ‘S’ Club for details on how to obtain tickets to the banquet.
The MSU Varsity ‘S’ Club, the official letter winners club of Michigan State University, wishes to continue this tradition of honoring our student-athletes in supporting their higher education dreams, but we need your help. This fellowship is not yet fully funded to endowment status. Our goal is to raise $150,000 to support the higher education of varsity letter winners at MSU.
