Kelly Moffitt, 2010 Recipient of
The Joey M. Spano Varsity 'S' Club Graduate Endowed Fellowship
The MSU Varsity '‘S’ Club is pleased to name Kelly K. Moffitt the 2010 recipient of the Joey M. Spano Varsity 'S’ Club Graduate Endowed Fellowship. Moffitt will be awarded $1,000 towards her graduate studies at Michigan State where she will pursue a Master’s of Science degree in Kinesiology/Sports Administration. She will also serve as a graduate assistant in Student-Athlete Support Services. A three year letterwinner in Women’s gymnastics, Kelly graduates this May with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Supply Chain Management.
The Joey M. Spano Endowment was established in fall, 2008 by the Club to provide academic scholarships to Spartan letterwinners who wish to pursue an advanced degree at MSU. The endowment seeks to support talented former student-athletes who are MSU Varsity ‘S’ Club members in good standing, have completed their undergraduate studies with a GPA of 3.1 or higher and have demonstrated outstanding character and exceptional leadership through university and community involvement.
As a student-athlete, Kelly exemplifies the characteristics the Varsity ‘S’ Club seeks in its honorees. Kelly’s academic and athletic accomplishments during her four years on campus are remarkable. She is a four-time NACGC/W Academic All-America selection and earned Academic All-Big Ten honors three times. Kelly won the Office of the Provost Award in 2007, was an Auto-Owners Champion in the Classroom and was a two-time recipient of the Spartan Academic Excellence Gala Top Scholar Athlete Award for the Women’s Gymnastics Team. Kelly made the Dean’s List every semester at Michigan State. Most recently, Kelly was honored with the Gwendolyn Norrell Community Service & Leadership Award.
Kelly has not only been an outstanding student and gymnast, her leadership and community service involvement is truly exemplary. With a highly demanding academic schedule as well as her rigorous athletic commitments, Kelly still found the time to serve as president of the 2009-10 Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. She was also MSU’s 2009-10 Big Ten SAAC Representative, Fall 2009 Chair of the Big Ten SAAC Meetings, MSU’s representative at the 2009 NCAA Student-Athlete Development Conference, 2009-10 MSU Athletic Council Member and 2009 Student-Athlete Prom Committee Chair.
Kelly has been involved in a host of community outreach programs including Spartan Buddies, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, Children’s Miracle Network Telethon & Golf Fundraiser, Pen Pal Program, Area 8 Special Olympics, Teams for Toys, Joe’s Kids, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Fundraisers, March is Reading Month, Healthy Living Outreach, Muscular Dystrophy “Muscle Team” Gala and Student-Athlete Mentor.
“I am honored to be this year’s recipient of the Joey M. Spano MSU Varsity ‘S’ Club Endowment Fellowship”, said Kelly. “I am ecstatic to carry on my scholastic endeavors at Michigan State University. I am also pleased to be officially joining the Varsity ‘S’ Club”.
Kelly will begin her graduate studies in Sports Administration this summer and work as the assistant tutorial coordinator for Student-Athlete Support Services at the Clara Bell Smith Academic Center. “My plans are to finish the Sports Administration program in a year’s time and continue on with a second master’s degree in Human Resources,” said Kelly. “My hopes are that these two degrees, coupled with all of my extra-curricular and community service experience, will lead me into a position within Student-Athlete Development at a leading collegiate institution. All of this will supplement my goal to help further promote the growth and development of student-athletes, our community, and society as a whole.”
