The Joey M. Spano MSU Varsity 'S' Club Graduate Endowed Fellowship has been created to assist MSU student-athletes advance their knowledge and transform their lives in their respective quest for excellence. The MSU Varsity 'S' Club wishes to continue this tradition of honoring our student-athletes in supporting their higher education initiatives, but we need your help! 

This fellowship is not yet fully funded to endowment status. Our goal is to raise $150,000 to support the higher education of varsity letter winners at MSU.

JOEY M. SPANO - Past President, MSU Varsity 'S' Club

Joey M. Spano

Joey M. Spano is currently the Director of Community Relations and Education for the West Bloomfield School District.  She is responsible for all district public information, communication, media relations and marketing.  She also works with and serves on the Board of Directors of the West Bloomfield Educational Foundation.  In addition, she oversees the district’s community education department which includes the planning, implementation and oversight of a variety of educational and enrichment programs for children. This includes early childhood education, before and after school child care, after school and Saturday enrichment, aquatics, intramurals, summer camps and academic summer school.  She also oversees the district’s adult education program which offers classes for the foreign-born through the English as a Second Language (ESL) program as well as career certification classes.  In addition, she is responsible for the marketing, rental and scheduling of all school district facilities. In 2004, West Bloomfield School District Community Education was name “Department of the Year” by the Michigan Association of Adult and Community Educators.  Ms. Spano has been with the district since 1995.
Prior to 1995, Ms. Spano was the Director of Parks and Recreation for West Bloomfield Township.  In her 12 years with the township, she oversaw the expansion of the parks system from 57 acres of parkland to over 400 acres, development of several parks, the passage of three park millage proposals and the procurement of over $4.8 million in state and federal grant awards for land acquisition and development.
Ms. Spano was a governor appointee to the Natural Resources Commission which sets policy for and oversees the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, serving for four years 1991-95.  In 1994, she chaired the “Urban Recreation Task Force” which developed a plan for expanding recreation opportunities in Michigan’s urban areas.
Ms. Spano holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Education and a Master of Arts degree in Public Relations from Michigan State University.  As an undergraduate at MSU, Ms. Spano earned varsity letters in basketball, softball and field hockey.  She was co-captain of the basketball team her senior year.  She competed in two college world series at shortstop in 1973 and 1974.  She is the 1999 recipient of the Nell Jackson Outstanding Alumna Award, presented annually by the Michigan State University Varsity 'S' Club to an alumna who has demonstrated outstanding career accomplishments and contributions to professional, charitable and civic organizations.
Ms. Spano has also been recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Michigan Historical Society and the Greater West Bloomfield Michigan Week Committee.  The West Bloomfield Board of Education presented her with the district’s annual service award in 1999.
Ms. Spano is immediate Past-President of the MSU Varsity 'S' Club, is a past president of the Optimist Club of West Bloomfield and past president of the Oakland County Community and Adult Education Association.  She served three years on the Michigan State University Alumni Association National Board of Directors, 2001-2004 and was treasurer in 2004.  Ms. Spano is currently serving a two year term on Michigan State University’s Athletic Council.  She has served on various other committees at MSU. 
Her hobbies include golf, fitness and supporting the Spartans.
Ms. Spano resides in Beverly Hills, Michigan.
